It’s a musical about a serial killer. Interested yet? “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is Tim Burton’s award-winning adaptation of the legend turned Broadway musical. The film follows Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), a man sent away by a jealous Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who wants Barker’s wife, Lucy. Barker returns to London illegally as Sweeney Todd, a bitter man seeking retribution. Upon his return, Todd learns that Lucy poisoned herself after being raped by Turpin. Turpin then takes Todd’s daughter, Johanna, as his own. Todd teams up with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) and re-opens his barbershop above her meat pie shop, where she sells “the worst pies in London.” The duo concocts a plan to destroy London’s corrupt aristocracy with Todd’s beloved razors, while selling many delicious meat pies at the same time. Todd remains focused on vengeance, plotting to murder Turpin and reunite with his daughter. The dark melodrama is classic Burton, with some laughs and ultimately, tragedy. “Sweeney Todd” is Depp’s sixth collaboration with Burton and Bonham Carter’s fifth. The film won an Oscar for “Best Art Direction.”
