In his day, Frank Lucas was the most dangerous man in Harlem. “American Gangster” is based on the true story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), a drug kingpin who operated in the ’60s. Lucas rises to power after his employer, a prominent black gangster, dies suddenly. Soon, Lucas begins smuggling heroin into the U.S., using a unique yet disturbing method. He supplies the streets with a cheap, powerful product, straight from Southeast Asia. Once Lucas becomes a top leader of the Harlem drug scene, he aligns his power with the Italian mafia for protection. When Lucas’ profile peaks, outcast detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) heads a drug task force to take him down. Lucas struggles to achieve his own version of the American dream, while Roberts tries to put his life back together. “American Gangster” boasts a recognizable cast including actors Josh Brolin and Cuba Gooding Jr., as well as rappers Common, T.I. and RZA. The film is up for two Oscars, including one for Best Supporting Actress Ruby Dee (who plays Lucas’ mother).
