Being a wealthy socialite is pretty easy, but not if you are Penelope Wilhern. “Penelope” is the tale of Penelope Wilhern (played by Christina Ricci) a wealthy young girl who has been cursed by her family’s spell. The curse can only be broken when she finds true love. There is only one problem. The hex leaves her with a snout (think swine), causing her parents (Catherine O’Hara and Robert E. Grant) to hide her away for years on their estate. Suitors are drawn to the Wilhern estate with the promise of a large dowry. They soon flee when they catch a glimpse of Penelope’s pig-nose. Only one young man (James McAvoy) sticks around, but after he disappoints her, she runs away to live a life on her own. Penelope is befriended by the unbelievable rebel Annie (Reese Witherspoon) who helps her discover she’s more than just a rich girl with a poor nose.
“Penelope” opens Feb. 29 in limited release.
