Scorsese and Stones shine

April 2, 2008, 12:00 a.m. EST

“The Rolling Stones and Martin Scorsese. Excited yet?

Scorsese filmed “Shine A Light” over the Stones’ two-night stand at New York’s Beacon Theater. The fall 2006 performances were a part of the band’s “A Bigger Bang” Tour.

The film contains footage spanning the band’s career, including historical clips, interviews and backstage looks.

“Shine A Light” features The Stones’ on-stage collaborations with Christina Aguilera, Jack White and Buddy Guy. An impressive crowd fills the theater, including former president Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Tunes like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Start Me Up” complete the film’s soundtrack. But the Scorsese-staple “Gimme Shelter” is noticeably absent from the film. Mick Jagger jokes that “Shine A Light” is Scorsese’s only film without it.

“Shine A Light” will be shown in IMAX and regular theaters.

“Leatherheads”

In theaters April 4

The Upstate and George Clooney will finally share the silver screen, in Clooney’s latest film, “Leatherheads.”

Clooney directed the romantic comedy, filmed in many local areas like Anderson and Greenville. Many Upstate residents are featured as extras in this period film.

Set in 1925, “Leatherheads” shows a young and struggling American pro football league. Team owner and captain Dodge Connelly (Clooney) is determined to lead his ragtag team to the big time. He also hopes to turn football into a nationally recognized sport.

World War I hero and college football star Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski of “The Office”) joins the team, bringing good looks and great speed. His heroic image comes under fire by new sports reporter, Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger).

Both Connelly and Rutherford fall for Littleton’s charms, ultimately competing for her affection.

“Smart People”

In theaters April 11

The brain behind the eccentric comedy “Sideways” has done it again.

Producer Michael London’s latest film, “Smart People,” is a sarcastic film about life, love and family, featuring an immensely talented cast.

Dennis Quaid plays Carnegie Mellon professor Lawrence Wetherhold, an intellectual who — shockingly — struggles with social situations. After his wife’s death, miserable Wetherhold has to raise his two children: a bitter son (Ashton Holmes) and an overachieving and overbearing teenage daughter (Ellen Page).

After an accident, Wetherhold reconnects with former student turned doctor (Sarah Jessica Parker), who informs him that he cannot legally drive for six months. Wetherhold’s situation is complicated even further when his freeloading adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church) comes for an extended visit, hoping to be his full-time driver.

The comedy explores the extreme circumstances of Wetherhold’s situation, with witty dialogue and plenty of awkward moments.
