This Grammy award-winning musician has been in the business for over 20 years, using his music as a “vessel” to brave the stormy seas of the industry. Partnering with the likes of Willie Nelson and Gloria Estefan along the way, Jean has turned his career into a strong ship.
After immigrating to the United States at age six, Jean began his music career in 1987, with New Jersey classmates Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel, forming the hip-hop trio The Fugees. The Fugees experienced enormous success with their second album, “The Score,” which earned the group two Grammys and sold over 17 million records. “The Score,” which features the hit singles “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Ready Or Not,” remains the top-selling hip-hop album of all time.
Jean launched a solo career in 1997 with the release of “The Carnival.” Since then, Jean has effortlessly fused musical genres, creating unique tunes with powerful messages. His sound is a combination of hip-hop, reggae, R&B and kompa (a popular Haitian rhythm).
Jean has released seven albums as a soloist, while appearing on numerous records as producer and performer.
Jean’s most recent single, “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)” reached Billboard’s top 20 in 2007.
Jean’s current tour is in support of his record, “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant.” The album features collaborations with Akon, Paul Simon and Norah Jones.
