Tortured souls are just some of the things that make haunted house guests scream.
Ah, American pastimes: baseball, lemonade. And haunted houses. Each year starting at the beginning of October and lasting through the month, hundreds of thrill-seekers (and guys who want an excuse for a girl to be close to him) venture to these haunted grounds. For all of your thrill-seekers or manly-men with something to prove, there are a plethora of haunted houses in the area that would make Jason, Freddy, and Leatherface proud. Who knows—they might even be there.
The Asylum (www.b937online.com) boasts as being the largest haunted house in Greenville with more than 17,000 square feet. It plays on the classic Halloween movies as Freddy and Jason terrorize its visitors. It takes a solid 20 minutes to make it through the whole house.
The Nightmare on Pendleton St. (www.b937online.com) is also in Greenville. It starts out in a mortuary and ends with Michael Myer’s house. Unlike most haunted houses, Nightmare on Pendleton St. does not provide you a guide, but it does have a series of twists and turns that would even confuse a compass.
The Mansion in the Mist (www.warehousetheatre.com) is set up in the Bly Mansion of Greenville. Those who enter will encounter the children who disappeared within the walls of this cursed house. All the while, try to unravel the mystery of what happened to the children. The house is the key.
Treedine’s Haunted Farm (www.treedines.com) is where Jason, the Butcher, and the Boogie Man stalk the woods looking for more souls. Located in Pelzer, venture through the woods hoping to survive.
Dead End on Kay Drive (www.myspace.com/deadendonkaydrive) in Easley provides a watered-down version of a haunted house. Recommended for all ages, go here if you are wary if you are a haunted house virgin. It offers both a haunted house and trail.
If you’re willing to travel a bit, venture down to Netherworld (www.fearworld.com) in Atlanta. Voted as one of the top haunted houses in the country, it is also one of the largest and most realistic. Netherworld has two separate haunted houses: Leviathan and Primal Fear. Leviathan is a chop-shop of horrors where a mad doctor builds bodies to host the undead spirits of the Netherworld. With monsters who bear the names the Summoner, the Harvester, and the Abomination, visitors are sure to encounter some gory sights.
Primal Fear preys on the instinctive fears in unnatural ways such as swarming insects, claustrophobia, blood, and death. It promises to allow its guests to expericence “nightmares ripped from the deepest recesses of your mind.”
Please visit the websites for each haunted house for individual prices, hours of operation, and directions.
