There's a monster in my closet

March 7, 2007, 04:52 p.m. EST

As winter fades, it’s time to examine your closet and do the thing I hate the most —spring clean.

Right now, my closet is packed full with stuff that does not fit or is last year’s style. I will never wear these clothes again. And as the new fashion season opens, I know there will be lots of new clothes I want. Time to make space for the future.

First off, let’s pack up all of those warm winter clothes. March is the official beginning of spring and hopefully I will have nomore need for wool sweaters or turtlenecks. I am ready to exchange my lined dress pants for flirty white slacks. A couple of things to remember when storing clothes are to use air-tight containers and dryer sheets to keep clothes fresh and moth free. Also, use clear storage bins so it is not a hassle to decipher what clothes are what.

Expect trash bags to be a spring essential — to dump old clothes in, that is. Toss anything you know doesn’t fit. If it’s too big, do not plan on growing into it. Certain styles just don’t last two seasons. But these pieces are still taking up prime real estate in your closet. Either reuse them in your newest clothing creation or get them out. Also, sift through your shoes. Old, ragged flip-flops should go. Old Navy sells cute flops for like five dollars. Ragged, dog-bitten shoes are not cool.

Finally, organize your closet. Expect to have new clothes coming in and plan space for them now. Use shoe racks to keep floor space clean. Also, folding is super space efficient. For college dorm rooms, try plastic drawers for more space. They come in all colors to match your room. Home Depot has a friendly staff that can help you find the right organization tools to help manage your space and time.

Spring will soon be in full bloom. Keep your eyes peeled for hot styles just around the bend. But before the temperatures rise, make sure you have space for them in your closet.
