Slightly above the hipbone

February 21, 2007, 04:21 p.m. EST

Dark wash, low rise, flare, boot-cut, hip huggers: the list goes on. With all of these options, it is hard to find a good, simple pair of blue jeans.

Jeans should be uncomplicated. They should simply accentuate who you are. It can be intimidating to stand in front of an entire wall of jeans and make a choice. Have no fear, Bootleg is here!

Things to consider when buying jeans are waist position, length and style.

The waist of the perfect pair of denim should sit at or slightly above the hipbone. They should NEVER be too tight. It is very unattractive when something is hanging over the waistline. When pants are bought in the correct size, the waist will sit perfectly. Jeans that are too low look unappealing. Too high denim turns you into a grandmother.

Length is also important to maximize the clean line of jeans. Designers have recognized this and made different lengths to accommodate. Don’t look at height when buying, look at how long your legs are. But as a rule of thumb, tall girls will wear long jeans. We don’t want anyone to think there is a flood coming either. Gap has the best length selection I have ever seen. Also try American Eagle and, believe it or not, Wal-Mart.

Style can be anything from color to cut and embellishment. Dark jeans are classy. Light washes are good for around town and goofing off, but if you really want to look good, choose stone washes that are dark and rich. Flare jeans were very elementary school. Boot-cut is the way to go. They look great with tennis shoes or sexy with heels. Boot-cut keeps a thin line, making your entire body look slimmer.

Embellished jeans are fun, but impractical. One or two pairs is great. But what can really make an outfit is the continuous, smooth line from waist to ankle. Keep jeweled or sequined jeans for matching tops and a trip to the club.

And probably the most important thing to remember when buying jeans is tightness. Jeans should hug your form, not show every dimple and detail. They should highlight the “right” areas and deflect attention from the problems. When jeans are too tight, they are just gross.

Gap has the most helpful staff when it comes to jeans. They will tell you what size, cut, style and everything that is just right for you. And they have so many options. But before you go buy new clothes, get rid of the old.

Jeans are made to heighten your beauty. See if there is anything else they can do.
