A drive-in legend

A Clemson fixture since 1956, Mac’s Drive-In specializes in fresh, no-nonsense burgers.

Swing open the door at Mac’s Drive-In and you’ll step into a different decade. This place has been a Clemson hang out for over half a century. The long linoleum bar is lined with orange stools beckoning patrons, the walls are painted traditional orange and navy, and to top it off, there’s even a rubber chicken hanging by a noose.

When I asked what was ordered most from the menu, I got a simple answer, “everything.” A cheeseburger and fries seemed to be an obvious choice, so I went for it and was not disappointed. Although I can appreciate gourmet burgers, I am a purist at heart. Mac’s mayo, lettuce and tomato beats secret sauce any day, and my meal was bigger and fresher tasting than anything you could get from fast food.

Another specialty that comes highly recommended is the grilled cheeseburger. Like a grilled cheese, it is made on regular bread instead of a bun and is quite a meal. Mac’s also has chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, milk shakes and don’t forget the sweet tea. Although I’m sure at one point burgers were a nickel here, prices are still very affordable. They just keep the menu simple and are proud to say they don’t get food thrown back in their faces and haven’t killed anybody.

Harold “Mac” McKeown, the original owner who is now 79 years old, opened the joint in 1956 when he graduated from Clemson. Mac’s originally operated out of a trolley car, but in 1964 they built a new building and have been serving from there ever since. According to long time employee Pat Hunter, cars would overflow the parking lot, spilling into the street and down the road.

It was a hot spot for college and high school kids alike; people came from miles around for good food and curbside service. All you had to do was honk and a waiter would come out to take your order. With crowds becoming increasingly rowdy, curbside service stopped in the mid-80s. Now, you can dine in at the long bar or eat outside on the deck.

The heart of Mac’s is really its tie to Clemson. I would bet even the biggest sports fanatic couldn’t name all the players who have their pictures on the wall. The only criteria for stars to make the cut, employees say, is to come in and eat. The newest thing I could spot in the place was a flat screen TV in the corner — for watching Clemson games of course. Football season is primetime to eat at Mac’s, especially for alumni who return for games. Familiar and new faces are always welcomed with great food and friendly service.

So drive down to 404 Pendleton Road and stop in for some nostalgia. It’s laid back; they don’t have set hours, but if you show up between 11 and 11, and never on Sundays, you’ll be in for a real meal. Remember, it’s cash only, and be sure to leave a tip at your seat.
