Inside the layer cake

April 11, 2007, 05:49 p.m. EST

Let’s talk about the perfect way to look chic and be in style year round. I’ve found a timeless technique— it’s called layering. Layering is the quickest way to look awesome in any season. It can be slimming when done right and is so easy anyone can pull it off.

Start with a simple bottom and work from there. I’m going to use a blue jean mini skirt and a simple, long black tee. Be careful when layering to make sure you don’t make things look too busy.

Proceed by adding a yellow tank over your t-shirt. Then a turquoise vest. This pop of color juxtaposes the darkness of the black and blue hues. Add chunky jewelry in all colors to make it your own.

Add black leggings for a continuous black line, which will make you look much slimmer. You can also try leg warmers in any color. Wear shoes of your choice; anything goes.

To dress your layered ensemble up, start with a black dress. Then add a hot pink blazer or jacket and a white belt. The belt brings the attention to a slim waist. Finish with tights and either white or black pumps.

Layering is great because it can hide figure problems and flatter your body type by adding a belt for a cinched waist look.

Like everything, layering begins with a good base. When shopping for new clothes, buy things that can be used plain or with accessories. Look for great foundation pieces at Wal-Mart. Check out tights and leggings there too. Search local boutiques for a tasty vest. Hunting hot jewelry? Check out Kendall’s Boutique in Anderson.

Layering should be easy and uncomplicated. It should define who you are. Remember to choose pieces that exude your personality. Layering can be adapted for any setting. So go ahead and help yourself look hot. n
